To save you time and maybe a trip, here are some quick things worth checking first — no tools needed for most of them. These are the same things Paul asks about when you ring, so running through them first means the call goes faster...

1. Check Your Circuit Breaker or Fuse Box

Oven not working at all; head to your switchboard and look for any tripped breaker (sometimes it'll sit in the middle position, not fully on or off). Reset it and test the oven. If it trips again immediately, stop — there's a fault that needs a licensed electrician.

2. Test the Power Point (Corded Ovens)

If your oven is plugged in rather than hard-wired, check the plug hasn't come loose, if it isn't loose, plug a different appliance — a kettle or lamp — into the same socket. If that doesn't work either, the problem is the power point/switchboard, not the oven. That's a job for an electrician, not an oven repairer.

3. Gas Models — Check the Valve First

If there's no gas smell but the burners won't light, first try a bbq lighter, if it doesn't light, check that the gas isolation valve (usually behind or beside the appliance) is turned on — the handle should be parallel to the pipe, not perpendicular.

4. Had a recent power outage or other people in the house

Often when the power goes out or someone has fiddled with the timer, it must be set according to the manufacturers instuctions. Many if not most Ovens require the timer to be set before the oven will work. Sometimes the clock looks like it want to work but it isn't responding to your button pushes. This can be a simple fix; turn your oven of at the power point, isolation switch or circuit breaker. Leave it off for say30 minutes and try to reset the clock again. If that doesn't work leave it off overnight. After. you'll have to call or bookonline for the 10% discount.

5. What to Tell Paul When You Call

• Brand and model number — usually on a sticker inside the door frame or on the back
• Electric or gas?
• Exactly what it's doing (or not doing) — e.g. 'heats up but shuts off after 10 minutes'
• Any error codes on the display if applicable
• How old the oven is and whether this fault has happened before
